Pastor Karen Yokota Love is in her fifth year of ministry and served at three other churches before arriving as our lead pastor at Mason United Methodist Church. She served at Milton, Whitney Memorial, and at Puyallup United Methodist Churches. Pastor Karen first sensed a call to ministry while in high school, but it wasn’t until a decade later that she responded. Immediately after graduating from UC Berkeley, she worked in the world of journalism and marketing. Upon answering her call to ministry, Pastor Karen moved to Claremont, CA to pursue seminary at Claremont School of Theology. While there, her call to pastoral ministry was affirmed and shaped by her experiences serving at Fullerton First UMC and community organizing at Claremont Presbyterian Church. She also worked with a Hispanic congregation, Taiwanese congregation, and a Korean congregation. Two vital ministries that spoke to her while at Claremont was working with people in recovery ministries and working with the immigrant population. She also enjoys working with children and youth. She found a passion and love for youth while working at Puyallup and misses them dearly. She looks forward to seeing what opportunities are awaiting here at Mason. Being immersed in the local community played a big part in Pastor Karen’s ministry at her previous appointments. In addition to leading worship, she has especially enjoyed forging relationships between the church and the community and hearing stories about how God has transformed people’s lives. She’s currently serving as a Board Member at the Tacoma Community House. She’s also active as a member on the Pacific Northwest’s Conference-Affiliated Commission on Race and Religion. Pastor Karen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and a minor in Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master of Divinity degree from Claremont School of Theology in Claremont, California. When not at church, Karen enjoys spending time with her husband Jesse Love and their friends and family. She enjoys any sort of DIY project, going to the movies, reading, hiking, and attending a good yoga class. Both Pastor Karen and Jesse are excited to be here at Mason and serve in this this community!
Michelle is a North Tacoma native, having attended school and worked here her entire life. She has spent her more than a decade-long administrative and office management career working for local non-profits, including churches, social services organizations, and the arts. She is delighted to be using her skills and experience to serve the Mason community as Office Administrator. In her personal life, Michelle is a devoted Seahawks fan and has been since 1976, when she attended their very first game in the King Dome with her father. In addition to cheering for her beloved Hawks, Michelle enjoys spending time with her husband Chris and their four-legged children: a border collie named Fleaflicker, a cat named KiKi, and two fire-bellied toads. She and her family still reside in North Tacoma and enjoy all of the great activities the city has to offer.
