Mason United Methodist Church is seeking candidates for a full-time position in Children and Youth Ministry. The Spiritual Director for Children and Youth is in charge of all ministries related to our church members aged birth to 18 years. This position will be open until the right candidate is found. Women, Persons of Color, and LGBTQ+ persons are encouraged to apply.
Mason United Methodist Church is a progressive congregation in the middle of a vibrant and growing neighborhood in Tacoma, Washington’s North End. The church is walking distance from coffee shops, restaurants, stores, a local movie theater, and a weekly farmer’s market. We have one traditional worship service on Sunday mornings at 10am.
The Spiritual Director for Children and Youth is responsible for the theological and spiritual formation of our children and youth. This ministry work begins at birth, and extends far beyond high school graduation. This job includes coordinating activities and lessons for youth and children, but the ideal candidate has a passion for deep engagement that goes beyond basic curriculum planning. We are not looking for someone who sees youth ministry as a step toward adult ministry. We are looking for someone whose passion for youth ministry is a vocational calling.
The Spiritual Director for Children and Youth will be involved in weekly worship. They are expected to preach at least twice per year, and would regularly lead a children’s lesson during the service in a rotation with the Lead Pastor and other church members. They are also encouraged to find new and unique ways to include children and youth in weekly worship.
-Regularly participate in leading worship, including reading Scripture and prayers, teaching children’s lessons, and preaching at least twice per year.
-Build a vision for children and youth ministry in our congregation, including weekly meetings, Christian education, spiritual direction, and theological development.
-Choose/develop curriculum, coordinate volunteers, and teach children and youth during Sunday morning classes, and other small group times.
-Coordinate outreach and make connections with family events in our neighborhood including, but not limited to: the Proctor Farmers Market, Art Festival, Daffodil Parade, and Proctor Treats (Halloween).
-Create meaningful relationships with our children and youth.
-Lead youth and children (and their families) in community service events, and local mission opportunities.
-Take youth on planned spiritual retreats/to camps in the area.
-Set long range goals and plan for the future of the ministry.
-At least two years of substantive experience working as a leader in children and/or youth ministry.
-Strong organization and communication skills.
-Some theological education, or at least the ability to articulate your theological positions in a way that is clear.
-A 4-year college degree, or equivalent experience.
-Some experience ministering among and communicating with people who identify as LGBTQ+, especially youth.
The preferred candidate will have:
-Some experience preaching
-A Masters degree in Theology
-A Wesleyan theological background
-Training or education in Christian education, childhood development, psychology, or education.
Interested candidates should submit a resume, cover letter, references, and a one-page statement outlining your understanding of youth and children’s ministry to the Lead Pastor, Thomas Irby: email@example.com.
