    Who: Children, youth, and adults who want to worship god through music, played or sung.

    Why: Music is one of the best ways to express closeness to God. Mason UMC welcomes all who feel called to this form of worship, service, and fellowship, whether you have experience or not.

    What:

    • Adult Choir
    • Handbells
    • Children's Choir
    • Youth Band

    Where and When: Groups meet at different times and with different frequencies. Adult choir meets and sings weekly, while the bell choirs, children's choirs, and band meet and perform during special times of the year.

    EDUCATION

    Who: All those interested in learning more about our Christian heritage and how to put it into action in our world.

    Why: Beginning with the earliest years, Christian education adds depth and meaning to life. Examining our beliefs is a way of strengthening them. Classes are offered for all ages, from preschool through Older Adult.

    What:

  • Preschool and Elementary Grade Sunday School (offered during the second service on Sundays).
  • Middle and High School Youth Programs: Click here to link to the Youth Page.
  • Adult Education: Adult classes meet at various times during the year, during the day and in the evenings. The offerings range from long term Disciple classes, to four week intensives twice a year, on to ongoing programs such as WomenShare. There is a learning opportunity for each person.

    FELLOWSHIP

    Who: Men, women, and youth who come together to grow in Christian life.

    Why: We grow in faith through corporate worship and service. United Methodist Women, Men's Fellowship, Young Adult Fellowship, and the youth groups create opportunities for meaningful Christian interaction that makes a difference in our community and the world.

    What:

    United Methodist Women: Circles meet during the day at various times. Those women who work are also welcome to join and contribute. United Methodist Women directly benefit the church in giving of time, funds, and talents.

    United Methodist Men: This group meets once a week for breakfast, fellowship, and prayer. The Men's fellowship conducts outreach projects, such as Mason Men at Work, that benefit the church and greater community.

    Young Adult Fellowship: This group of active young adults, ages 20 and up, meets once a week for fellowship and discussion.

    Youth Groups: Whether serving at St. Leo's kitchen or going on mission trips far afield, Mason's Middle and High School Youth Groups Are active contributors to God's kingdom. Click here to connect to the Youth Page.

    Women Share: Women's fellowship and support group that meets weekly at the church. Check calendar for details.

    Sunday Solos: Women's fellowship and support group that meets monthly for Sunday lunch in homes. Check calendar for details.

    Older Adult Ministries: Activities for Older Adults are designed to provide opportunities for spiritual growth and life enrichment for and with older adults and others in the church community. Gathering of Seniors, for example, meets monthly for fellowship and designated programs. Other activities and classes are offered during the days and the evenings, with crossover into the Adult Education program.

    SERVICE

    Who: Church members and friends who reach out to those in the greater community, bringing God's love to life through work and service, and the human touch.

    Why: Christian faith grows in action. We reach out to those in need to bring God's kingdom into being.

    What:

    Paint Tacoma/Pierce Beautiful: This group joins together to paint one house each summer.

    Habitat for Humanity: We design and coordinate Mason Church's participation in this program. Help build houses in Tacoma.

    Hunger Walk Team: We design and coordinate Mason Church's participation in this Pierce County event.

    Project Interdependence: In small teams of three to five persons, we work to form genuine, long-lasting and mutually supportive relationships with WorkFirst participants. Initial and ongoing training is provided.

    United Methodist World Mission Team: We inform the congregation regarding the use of apportionment funds and special offerings for missions, and especially of the outreach activities of UMCOR, the United Methodist Commission on Relief.

    YOUTH ACTIVITIES

    Youth Director

    Who: Anyone in middle and high school.

    Why: For fellowship, fun, and growth in the love of God and community.

    What: Middle school and high school youth meet weekly to explore our Christian faith, have a good time, and participate in activities that help our community.

    Where and when: See events listed on the calendar.

    Just a few examples:

    Boy Scout Troop #224

    The mission of Troop 224 is to promote the training of young men in Scout craft and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and to arouse and inspire responsibility along with the Scout oath, law, and outdoor code.

    Troop 224 has a long history of serving young men in the north Tacoma area. The Troop celebrated it's 40th anniversary in 1995 and is quickly approaching it's 50th anniversary. We just recently, in November of 2001, awarded our 60th Eagle Scout .

    We meet at Mason United Methodist Church on Monday night starting at 7:00 PM.

    Reach Out

    Who:Church members and friends who reach out to those in the greater community, bringing God's love to life through the human touch.

    Why: In a disconnected world, we are often starved for personal interactions. The Reach Out team provides opportunities for personal contact through activities in the church and in the community.

    What: Sunday morning hospitality and refreshments, greeters, ushers and van transportation. In addition the following events take place regularly:

    Calling Team: Mason UMC members call on housebound people in our congregation.

    Halloween Chili Feed: Mason United Methodist Church sponsors a free chili feed which benefits Unicef through donations.

    Junior Daffodil Parade: The parade just for children is sponsored by the Daffodil Association, the Proctor district and Mason United Methodist Church. Mason UMC serves as headquarters for the parade, as well as having a float.

    Proctor Arts Festival: Mason United Methodist Church sponsors the Art Show durin the Proctor Arts Festival. The show is located in our narthex and parlor..

    Relate to God

    Who: A group of devoted people who meet monthly to help plan and create an atmosphere conducive to worship in the sanctuary.

    Why: Atmosphere matters. As the liturgical seasons of the church change, so the sanctuary should reflect both the season and a sense of continuity. The Relate work group strives to create an atmosphere during each season that brings people closer to God.

    What: A wide range of tasks are performed by Relate. Changing paraments, designing altar displays, setting up for communion, decorating the Christmas trees, or arranging Easter flowers are all tasks performed by a flexible group, varying in size from task to task.

    Where and When: The work group meets as needed, in varying locations in the church, and in varying configurations. Tasks may be taken on on a routine basis or for the short term only. It just depends on the project.

    Church Council

    Who: The Mason Church Council is composed of representatives from all standing committees and ministries, the pastors, and an appointed lay leader.

    Why: We exist to execute the vision for Mason Church as well as approve policy recommendations.

    What: The Church Council takes action on all matters pertaining to the running of the Church.

    Where and When: Church Council meets monthly on the fourth Wednesday of the month in the Conference Room.

    Staff-Parish Relations Committee

    Who: The Staff-Parish Relaitons Committee consists of members of the church including the lay leader and a lay member of the annual conference. The committee must not include an immediate family member of the pastor or staff or more than one person from the same household.

    Why: Staff and congregational interests must beintegrated to focus on the mission of the church.

    What: The Staff-Parish Relations Committee confers with the congrataion and the staff/pastor about ministry direction, assesses the ministry of the congregation and the staff/pastor annually and consults with the district superintendent.

    Where and When: The Staff-Parish Relations Committee meets monthly, if needed, in the Conference Room. Members of the congregation can bring issues before the committee by calling or leaving a note with the Committee Chair. Contact the church office for information on the make up of the Committee.

    Minutes are not taken at Staff-Parish Committee meetings.


     

    Finance Commitee

    Who: The Finance Committee consists of members of the church with some financial background, the Church Treasurer and the pastors.

    Why: The church runs smoothly only if financial matters are prayerfully overseen.

    What: The Finance Committee provides financial direction and guidance, as well as overseeing stewardship of the church's financial base. All decisions about major purchases or funding drives must go through finance, as must decisions about special offerings.

    Where and When: The Finance Committee meets monthly on the third Wednesday of the month in the Conference Room.

    Trustees

    Who: The Trustees consists of members of the church who

    Why: The proper keeping of God's house facilitates the ministry of the church.

    What: The Turstees oversee, maintain and supervise all Mason Church property, receive and administer all gifts, and ensure that all trust funds are invested properly.

    Where and When: The Trustees meet monthly on the first Wednesdayof the month in the Conference Room..

    MASON UNITED METHODIST WOMEN


    Who: Women who commit themselves to expanding the concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

    Why: Creation of a supportive fellowship for the purpose of knowing God and empowerment and advocacy for social change.

    What:

    • Education for mission
    • Social issues awareness
    • Leadership development, schools and workshops,
    • Financial support for mission programs and projects throughout the U.S. and around the world

    Where and When: There are two circle meeting each month.
